A shawl for midsummer!

A shawl red as a June strawberry, light as an evening breeze!

The name of the pattern is Beamer

Now, in many parts of Scotland, Beamer is not a particular brand of car, but a word for blushing.

To “take a beamer” means to blush – most usually with embarassment – but I reckon you are more likely to beam with happiness whether you’re knitting or wearing this shawl.

I’ve designed a few Milarrochy tweed patterns recently featuring similarly structural lace motifs: first Con Alma, then Yorlin. The motif I’ve used on Beamer echoes the earlier patterns in its strong diagonals and centres.

If you’ve come across this particular motif before, you’ll know its incredibly rhythmic and intuitive – its just one of those naturally knitterly patterns that feels fun and interesting when you are knitting it.

Beamer alternates patterned areas with sections of plain stockinette, so there are parts of the pattern where you can just switch off and knit.

I wanted a fairly big shawl, and Beamer’s wingspan is about 77 inches.

But, by adding further or fewer plain and patterned sections, you can easily make the shawl larger or smaller, just as you like.

At this size, the shawl can easily be wrapped around the neck

or body.

A great lightweight knit for long summer evenings!

Beamer would work really well in a wide range of fingering or heavy lace-weight yarns – but if you want to make a strawberry-red midsummer shawl like this one, there are kits in the Cranachan colourway in the shop.
